Selor

The project
The Selor project is a scientific screening, adaptation and
extension of the national language exam for federal employees in
Belgium. The complete overhaul of the exam can be seen as a model
for state-of-the-art integration of new technology, sound
methodology and the introduction of a contemporary vision on
language learning and language testing, in line with the Common
European Framework for Languages (CEFL).
The basis for the project was the existing Atlas Language Exam,
containing over 60.000 items in 2 languages (Dutch and French). The
S-Alto project (Selor – Authentic Language Testing Online) started
with a psychometric screening and calibration of the existing item
database. The result of this screening (a) led to the discovery of
many erratic items, (b) inspired for a new structure of the
itembase, (c) for new levels, (d) delivered interesting (IRT-based)
psychometric metatags (like Pval, Logit) for each item, (e) showed
gaps in the itembase and inspired for new functionality of the
testing software (like better spreading of the use of items by
introducing a dynamic popularity metatag) and (f) helped to create
varied and equilibrated scenarios for the new exams.
According to a more modern view on language acquisition and
language skills, new tasks were created for testing people’s
communicative language skills (reading and listening
comprehension). In line with the CEFL, more items were created for
functional and communicative testing, based on a description of the
professional domain in which the testee is going to work. The
introduction of smart (technological) question types allowed for
the use of authentic language materials (multimedia) in the exam.
Finally, a new online preparatory learning environment has been
created, including thousands of exercises and simulation exams,
with tracking and logging of people’s progress and results, thus
allowing a truly useful training before the exam.
